People in Humboldt quite fancy Oberon Grill. Nestled in Old Town Eureka, the walk is pretty nice.... :-)
Well to start with, the setting tries to give a classic old world vibe, which is fine by me. You can definitely read through a bit of history while waiting for the menu and then the food to be served.
So, we were hungry and just wanted to eat. No alcohol this time. I was expecting some good old classic food.
We ordered appetizers: Crab cakes, Fruit and Brie Plate and Prawn cocktail. The crab cakes(3 PCs) were phenomenal, wish they could throw in one more; Fruit and Brie Plate and Prawn cocktail was averagely good. I have had better.
Main Entree: Ordered specials of the day. One was a fish with some sort of Mango Chutney and other was Filet Mignon. Well. the fish was cooked well. However, the chutney was a downer. The mango chutney was no chutney at all. As I mentioned it to the server, she went back to the kitchen and got me a Mango Salsa. The Mango was very tart, but the raw onions completed overpowered the Mango and my taste buds too... : -( . You understand right, the lingering raw onion smell on your mouth. So a bummer. But the server and I do not remember her name. She was very nice.
For the Filet Mignon, it was so so. The top crust was charbroiled and tasted burnt. I can say, we have had better steak before.
And it was very expensive and still is.
So crab cakes, server has helped it to get a 3 star. I will go back for the crab cakes. But now sure about the other food.
Satisfactory Level : Good, Very Good, Bad, Very Bad, Okay, Great
- Food : Okay. Had better
- Ambience : Fancy. A light classical music to go with the era setup would give it the extra lift
- Service : Good
- Price : Expensive ( 2 appetizer, 2 entrees, no desert) - $80 approx
