Masaki Kyoto Japanese Restaurant - Eureka

1/24/2019

I was at a Japanese restaurant yesterday night. Well, it was our 2nd visit in less than a week.

Since I am writing my first blog, I will write about my previous experiences as well.

Name :  Masaki Kyoto Japanese Restaurant
Address: Google it or here it is 320 F street, Eureka, CA- 95501
Humboldt County

My first impression when walked in last week was that  of a very relaxed setting, easy and nothing fancy. We decided to sit at the bar. The server(now I cannot remember her name, but may be next time) let us take any of the empty chairs.

We arrived during the happy hour, so we ordered two miso soups(at a reduced price) and japanese sake ( BOGO), served warm which had a sweet  nutty aroma and taste with hints of plum. Very apt on a cold winter rainy evening.

We were famished and I for sure wanted to have everything on the menu. I am sure most of you feel the same when you are hungry. I feel that all the time...... :-D  :-D

Anyway, we ended up ordering the following
1. Gyoza- pork dumplings with finely chopped veggies. I liked the served the sauce that it was served with. In fact was poured over it.
2. Hot spicy rolls. They did take the avocado out as I am allergic to avocados. No, I know, who on earth is allergic to Avocado's. Sadly, I am.  But they did serve it seperately
3. Another roll- Can't remember the name. Will get the name when I visit them the next time
4. Small plates - Bulgogi Beef.

The portion size was pretty decent.

Tip:  In fact, over the years I have realized, when you order Japanese food, particularly, sushi or sashimi, it really fills you fast although they appear very small. So order a few to begin with and then order a fresh if you want to eat more

Overall, It was okay.  I may not go back so much for the food but definitely for the ambience.

Oh I forgot about yesterday night.

So yesterday, I was back and this time we ordered the dinner

1. Chicken Katsu
2. Beef Bulgogi

All of this served with Rice, a veg saute, thinly sliced cucumber in a sweet tangy vinegar, potato patty(that was the best) , miso soup and fuji apple salad with roasted almonds.

I am allergic to tomatoes and although the server did confirm there are no tomatoes; the katsu sauce did and infact does have tomato paste.  My taste buds did not lie and when I asked, they did confirm that the katsu sauce did infact have tomatoes.  Well, allergic reactions !!!!!

So they went back and changed the dishes and came back with a fresh plate. I said no sauce.

The fried chicken wasn't seasoned well; in a typical scenario, the sauce takes care of that. So I got to taste the unseasoned chicken, which was deep fried and then cut into small bite size pieces and served with rice and other sides.

The server took off the drinks from our tab. Very nice of him.

Price: It is definitely expensive. Tell me one Japanese Restaurant in America or outside of Japan which is not. I wish they were a little affordable.

Satisfactory Level : Good, Very Good, Bad, Very Bad, Okay, Great

  • Food :  Okay. Had better
  • Ambience: Very Relaxed. Not fancy
  • Service: Very good
  • Price: Expensive ( 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, no desert) - $55  approx
